Episode 6 spoiler-ish stuff inside.
I recognize most of the background scenery, and I can tell you that most of the scenes through B.C. were shown in order.
I don't know the Kootenay backcountry at all, but I know there are no such places as "Wolf Mountain" and "Bear Pass". !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! confirms that it's Reco Mountain, between New Denver and Kaslo.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! leaving (or heading into?) downtown Vancouver.
Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Going !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Lost opportunity for a "we're beyond Hope" joke !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
The red sign !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the right: "Watch Highway Thru Hell September 4th on Discovery Channel".
More " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! "/Jamie Davis Motor Truck merchandise in the background.
Clarkson's truck has no plates at all. I couldn't even find a B.C. temporary permit anywhere on it, even though it's nothing more than a sheet of paper you tape to your window. James' truck has an Alberta plate with a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so it's owned by a company. But I don't think it's a rental, as Alberta rental plates are in a A-12345 format.
I live in Kamloops. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is likely as close to "local" that TG will ever get for me. Leaving Hope, they take the Crowsnest Pass (Highway 3). I've never travelled it, so the highway scenes from hereon in (such as the lede photo) don't look familiar to me.
Obligatory. Love it or hate it, Crappy Tire is as uniquely Canadian as Tim Horton's.
Canadian Tire-branded hats...
And then they markered-out the "Tire" so as to not advertise, I guess. Kinda pointless right after the shot outside the store. Besides, why not just buy non-branded hats?
The door mat gives away that this is a Lordco, not a Cambodian Tire. It's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! The C.T. is likely the Oliver one, also.
Finally, the attractive small town in which James wants to stop for a Cappuccino is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , 45 minutes west of Oliver. It's the only scene that I could tell was shown out-of-order. I presume they did so in order to show the snow progressively getting thicker as they travelled towards Hammond.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the amount of "movie magic" was much less than I imagined it to be.

Top gear should do a cristmas special where they drive across Canada.

That would be awesome, but it would take weeks to film.

I live exactly 5 miles from a major spot that they stopped at during the Southeast road trip special.
It's the town where they paint each others vehicles Southern offensively.

This Canadian Tire place looks alright. It looks like Minnesota's Mills Fleet Farm. Why would people hate it? Also Clarkson and May in camo baseball caps was too funny.

From what I can tell about Mills Fleet Farm, add an auto service centre, auto parts department, and one-quarter of a Home Depot's worth of hardware and tools, and it sounds about right.
Their stores are often haphazard, their auto service and parts staff have a bad reputation, and a fair amount of the products they sell is junk.
But, if you need a new starter for a '91 Corolla after 5:00 or on a Sunday, they're a godsend. Or, maybe you just need a rifle, duct tape, poly wrap, a hockey mask, and a chainsaw in one visit. Not gonna judge, but CT's got ya covered.
I do like 'em , overall.

I drove through Canada... It sucks, especially Ontario. It's so damn long and boring.... Sooooo long....

My local Crappy Tire dropped a half ton Chevy truck off the back of one of their lifts last summer. The hitch on the back of the truck dug an inch deep gouge in the concrete floor.

Basically Fleet Farm is Canada Tire, but with Farm supplies then (it has everything you listed as well). It is a place I frequent often because they have EVERYTHING. But I wouldn't say their products are junk, definitely cheaper, but they carry top brands as well.

What about Menard's? We had to get a grill hose last time we were in Minnesota. Haven't been in one in a while.

this may get FP'd, I really enjoyed this, its nice to know it wasn't all faked, the closest top gear ever got to me was in season four of TGUSA, they did the race agianst the boat, the rally car and the aston martin vanquish about 40 miles from where I live.

CanTire is known for having a budget friendly tools with lifetime warranty.
The sockets are pretty great but ratchets wear out quickly. They're perfect for a weekend gear head.
They do have lots of big brands as well.

Menard's is moving in that direction, but it is still more of a hardware store like Home Depot. Aside from a full grocery Fleet Farm really has just about everything.

Really? I've always wanted to do that. Actually, that sounds familiar, I think you and I have discussed this before.
Anyway, I didn't have high hopes that it would be a good episode, but others have said (and I agree) that it was one of the best ones this season.

Highway 3 is very nice. In 2008 I drove from Vancouver to Ottawa, and we took highway 3 just to see something different.
Frank slide on the alberta side is incredible.

That would be something else. Start in Victoria (Named for a Queen!), drive in Vancouver and enjoy the sunshine, then blast through the rockies, across the prairies and into deep drifts of snow and die.
perfect!

Not long, it would be like an eighth of the length if the roads weren't all switchbacks

Switchbacks? in Ontario?
Switchbacks don't come up until you reach BC. And it takes a long time to get there lol

The entirety of northern ontario is switchbacks, when you're heading west.

You're fucking with me right? :)
When going from Montreal —-> Ottawa —-> South Bay —-> Thunder Bay—-> Winnipeg taking the transcanadienne, it's the straightest most boring ride on earth with a corner every 200 miles... I hated it sooooo much!!! :)

We stuck closer to the lakes, going up from just above toronto to thunder bay takes a 15H on it's own.

Ok I see, you still have a very loose definition of a switchback haha :)
Coming from Montreal, it was a bit faster for me to go all the way up north and stay on the transcanadienne :)

I've been to BC, those are significantly tighter switchbacks, but weren't on main travel routes, they were alternatives. While it's the only highway north on the way out of home, and it's a constant meandering back and forth. We went on a trip out west, and spent significantly more travel time in Ontario than anywhere else, it takes longer to get out of Ontario than it takes to cross the entirety of the prairies because of those roads
Flavien Vidal

Yeah from Ontario crossing the whole state was 1451km for us... Did that feel long. All the way accross it's a crappy one lane road with trucks all over it, day and night... Next time if I ever have to do it again (chances are low, as I live in Japan now lol), I'd cross through the US. No more trans-canada thing for me :)
When I drove from Seattle to Montreal, the whole trip was so much enjoyable than Vancouver Montreal through Canada.

The Canadian tyre is definitely the one in Chilliwack. The building in the background gives it away as it has a Canada Post, a farmers market and a dollar store.

Yeah, the Oliver CT is near an Airport and beside a Marks Work warhouse. Someone else pointed out the CT is the one in Chiliwack. Also, that Lordco is actually in Osoyoos, which is directly on Hwy 3, while Oliver is about 20 min north.
